LECTURE NOTES INTRODUCTION

I am Jack Bowman and I am going to be here a couple days to show you how to make shadow puppets that you can apply to theater and dance.

The shadow puppets you are going to build are based on Indonesian shadow puppets.

There are only three vocabulary words we are going to learn about Indonesian shadow puppets.  One is the play itself.  It is call the Wayang.  Another is the puppeteer.  He is called the Dalang.  The third is this abstract puppet called the Kayonan.  It is usually in the shape of a leaf with the top pointed upwards and moves or flutters to indicate the start of the story.  You do not have to build a Kayonan because of the size of our stage limits things.  You will have to build a puppet and perform as well as write a short script.

In a few minutes I will show you a short (5 minutes or less) shadow puppet show called EvaRave.  And afterward I have two (about one minute) performances of string puppets, called marionettes. that I will show you.

After these three demonstrations I will show you the construction techniques that you need to know and then you can begin writing your script or constructing your puppet.

Perform EvaRave puppet show.  Remind the students that an attribute of Indonesian Wayang is that the conflict is left unresolved.  Remind them that this is the type of puppet they are going to build and perform with.

Now I am going to do a one minute performance with a Czechoslovakian puppet.  His name is Deeter the singing Nazi from Crawford Texas.  So let's welcome Deeter.

Perform Deeter the singing Nazi from Crawford Texas.

Now I have another puppet from Burma, now called Myanmar. His name is Zarathustra.  You will notice that he is both written differently and controlled differently.

A philosopher Nietzsche in the late 1800's wrote a book called "Thus Spake Zarathustra"  Zarathustra was the next evolutionary man or superman among ordinary men.

Zarathustra is omnipotent.  No not impotent but Omnipotent.  That means he knows all. He is here to answer your questions for you.  So let's welcome Zarathustra.

Perform Zarathustra:
